This course covers applications of epidemiologic methods and procedures to the study of the distribution and determinants of health and diseases, morbidity, injuries, disability, and mortality in populations. Epidemiologic methods for the control of conditions such as infectious and chronic diseases, mental disorders, community and environmental health hazards, and unintentional injuries are discussed. Description:
This course provides an introduction to and overview of the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) and their impact on health, functioning, and quality of life across the life course. Students completing this course will explore social, economic, environmental, and political factors contributing to health and health disparities across various populations and communities. Topics to be discussed include health disparities, the life course perspective, intersectionality, racism, discrimination, socioeconomic status, housing, and residential segregation, access to healthcare, and social and environmental factors. The course will examine current efforts to address the SDOH, advocacy, and efforts to effectively mobilize health promoting pathways. Students will be challenged to reflect upon the determinants critically and propose innovative and grassroots strategies to improve health, reduce health disparities, and address the nonmedical determinants of health. Description:
This course examines the ways in which racism structures health outcomes, healthcare access, and public health priorities in the United States and globally in ways that produce health disadvantages for historically marginalized groups. We will examine how racism affects health across many dimensions, and why health disadvantages have persisted for people of color over time despite remarkable progress in medical care and medical interventions. Drawing on theory and broad research from public health, we will examine how structural racism in medical experimentation, residential segregation, incarceration, discrimination, education, and employment have created health inequalities that are a public health problem. This course will emphasize the important role of racism as a social determinant of health. Students will be encouraged to think critically about how to design public health interventions that prioritize social justice to achieve health equity. More Info

This course provides an introduction to applied biostatistics and corresponding statistical computing using one of common statistical software such as Statistical Applications Software or Stata. Course content includes basic probability, estimation using descriptive statistics, i.e., means, proportions, variances, correlation, and linear regression. Inferential statistical methods based on the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, and p-values will be covered. Hypothesis testing will be conducted for 1-sample, 2-sample, >2-sample designs using analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), linear regression and logistic regression. Core research concepts are introduced including specification, research ethics, design, data collection, measurement, survey design, bias, qualitative and quantitative research, data management and data analysis, research implementation, interpretation, and dissemination. Learners will also understand how research is used in evidence-based practice. This includes the ability to frame empirically answerable questions, locate data relevant to those questions, critically evaluate such data, and apply it to practice situations. This year-long capstone course challenges students to integrate and apply knowledge from their undergraduate studies in a comprehensive, self-directed project addressing real world problems and issues in urban public health settings. Students will work independently or in small groups to research, develop, and present a project related to their field of study. The course includes milestones to guide students through the process, from proposal and research to execution and final presentation.
