Survey and analysis of the early development of the United States as an independent federal republic. Focus is on key issues: civil liberties, slavery and the first emancipation, federalist economic policy, neutrality, war, institutional growth (presidency, congress, judiciary, political parties), and changes in the social, ideological and cultural environment.
