Undergraduate Colloquium: Literature in Public Spaces

Description:
This one-credit course encourages students to examine the social life of literature in today's culture. Students explore literature as it is presented in public settings and critique that experience by writing reviews. The course presents students with a series of guest lectures, reading, film and dramatic presentations, workshops, and organized discussions.

Notes:
To receive a grade, students must attend at least five events and write critical reviews for each event attended.

Class Notes: Do you want to have an adventure? Would you like a break from the city and the opportunity to explore a beautiful island? Do you need a single course credit? If the answer is yes to any of these, sign up for a weekend at the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station for an immersive engagement with a selection of poems and short stories about the ocean, New England history, and environmental justice.,Logistics: Students will need to arrange their own transportation to Hyannis on Friday morning. While at the field station, you will stay in the bunkhouse, just steps from the ocean. Our meetings will be held both inside and outside, and we encourage you to do your reading and writing on the beach!,Dates: you must be available to travel on Friday, September 15th and return home Sunday evening, September 17th. We can help facilitate carpools to the ferry terminal in Hyannis, which is a 75 minute drive from UMass Boston. Housing and ferry are included!,No prerequisites are necessary for this course.
