Class Notes: This course focuses on the developments in painting, sculpture, and architecture of the Italian peninsula from approximately 1300 to 1500, a period commonly known as the early Renaissance. It examines the dialog between the visual arts and the period's philosophical, literary, political, religious, and social values. It also examines how the idea of the artist as an intellectual and as a creative individual developed. It focuses on the major centers of Florence, Rome, and Venice, but will also include other less-studied areas of the peninsula and its connections with the rest of Europe and the Mediterranean world. Among the protagonists of the course are Giotto, Donatello, Masaccio, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Bellini, Mantegna, Carpaccio, Leonardo, and the young Michelangelo. Some requirements include: consistent attendance, active class participation, quizzes or reading journals, and a research essay with in-class presentation. The course meets for one single block per week; several class meetings will be held in local museums and sites during class hours. Prerequisites: any one of the following: Art 101, 102, 306, 309, 311, 312, 313L, or permission of the instructor.
