These issues can be (but not limited to): colonialism, misogyny, racism, climate change, body autonomy, the legacies of slavery, and female solidarity. Our schedule is divided into three modules: Module 1 ’The woman’s body, between oppression and resistance’, Module 2 ’Women of Letters’, Module 3 ’Women & Eco-resistance’. While we will focus primarily on French speaking zones: Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana; we will also venture in other English-speaking or Spanish-speaking territories thanks to the speakers that will visit our class (in these specific cases, the readings and discussions could be either in English or in French depending on the speaker’s preferred language). Through this course, you will get to meet and learn from contemporary artists, scholars, journalists, museum curators who are from/work/live in the Caribbean. This is an exciting opportunity to be immersed in the subject without even having to leave UMass Boston’s campus!
