Diversity in Aging Societies

Course #: GERON GR 724

Description:
This seminar provides an overview of social theory and research relating to diversity and inequality in aging populations. The course will be organized around themes that are central to the aging experience for the population as a whole, but that shape the collective experience of groups within and across societies in distinctive ways. ''Diversity'' in this course is construed broadly to incorporate race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation, immigration status, and ability, as well as how these identities interact. Particular attention will be directed toward understanding intersections with historical experiences, demographic characteristics, life course trajectories, cultural characteristics and socioeconomic differences in shaping diverse later life experiences. Opportunities and challenges for research will be examined.
