This course provides an opportunity, at the 300 level, for the department to offer one-time-only courses on special topics of current interest to faculty members and students. It also is sometimes used as a way of offering proposed new courses on a trial basis before they are officially approved as part of the economics curriculum.

The purpose of the course is to provide a discussion on the economic development of Southeast Asian economies, giving an overview of the historical and contemporary factors that have shaped their experiences. Topics include colonialism and its impact on economic trajectories, the experience of industrialization, the role of democracy in economic growth and development in some of these economies, and the region's experiences with financial crises. The course will also feature some comparative discussions with East Asian economies.This course uses course material available through the Healey Library and other sources.
